The “Defend With One Hand” Drill

Let’s talk about a Wing Chun drill I really like, the one hand defense drill.

The One Hand Defense (OHD) Drill is a fun way to train your technique, movement, and your overall fundamentals of Wing Chun. You can do this on your own or with a partner.

Alone

Simply choose an active arm and let the other one rest behind you. Then imagine an oncoming strike coming towards you from your left side. Think of all the possible combinations you can defend with with your active arm. Then switch your active arm with your resting arm.

With Partner

One initiates and one defends. Initiator throws their attacks randomly and defender tries to defend each strike with a technique. Defender is not limited to staying in their position and can shift or step away from oncoming attacks.

The goal of the drill is to show you your core techniques that you depend on.

If you’re already familiar with this drill, let me know what you think of it and if it has helped you.

If this is the first time you’ve come across this drill, find a training partner and give it a try, then let me know what you think!
